ABS-CBN’s 60th Anniversary Weekend

ABS-CBN kicks off its 60th anniversary of television broadcasts with the Grand Kapamilya Weekend from October 5-6.

On October 23, 1953, ABS-CBN launched the first television broadcast in the Philippines. In the sixty years since its first broadcast, the Kapamilya network grew into a national and global network, becoming the first network in the country to air in color, in high definition, and via satellite. On the weekend of October 5-6, ABS-CBN will hold a variety of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its television broadcasts.

The Grand Kapamilya Weekend will be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle, and noontime variety shows ‘Showtime’ and ‘ASAP‘ will hold live shows at the venue. In addition, a bazaar, a medical mission, a soup kitchen, an exhibition game between Star Magic and ABS-CBN Sports staff, a Star Cinema live screening, and a story-telling session will also be held at the venue. The nightly festivities will see a live concert sponsored by MOR 101.9, and a live Kapamilya KTV.

In addition, a pair of charitable eco-runs will also take place, with both the ‘One Run, One Philippines: Isang Bayan Para sa Kalikasan’ and the ‘Run for the Pasig River‘ aiming to raise money for environmental concerns. And finally the Kapamilya All-Star Games will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 5 for basketball, and at the Marikina Sports Complex on October 6 for Volleyball.

I was at the Kapamilya All-Star Volleyball Game and I enjoyed it although I felt other Kapamilya stars like Maja Salvador, Bea Alonzo, Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes played to add more star power.

By the way, ABS CBN will air a Cheche Lazaro documentary on Sunday night, October 13, about Transgenders. Ms Lazaro produces docus for ABS-CBN monthly on Sunday’s Best. October 20 will be the Star Awards for Music which is blocktimed by Airtime Marketing under Tess Celestino.

    • Nice. Their documentaries are way better than GMA’s, even though the latter’s docus have been given citations and awards globally. And for some reason many award shows and concerts were given to ABS-CBN every Sunday because their production values were much better.

The Philippine Movie Press Club always taps ABS-CBN to air their awards shows because many movie writers are known to be very close to ABS-CBN stars. I was at the Kapamilya Volleyball Game last Sunday and I found the game very entertaining, even when I watched the telecast later in the evening.

Cheche Lazaro is definitely one of the best documentary producers. I enjoyed her teleserye docu which ABS aired not once, but TWICE.

    • Undoubtedly, but regardless of the station Cheche Lazaro will always be a legend. And ABS-CBN pretty much regained its footing in the news reporting department once they hired her.

ABS CBN will air Star Cinema movies on Sundays starting October 13 with Enteng ng Ina Mo starring Vic Sotto and Ai ai de las Alas. These movies will be aired at 8:15 pm after Rated K followed by Gandang Gabi Vice at 10:15 and the Cheche Lazaro documentary at 11:15 pm.

I know that. The launch of Singing Bee has been reset. I wonder what happened to Sarah Geronimo’s Sunday drama series. She taped just one episode with Paulo Avelino and affer that, she did not tape any more episodes.

    • It had to do with her being appointed as judge of ‘The Voice of the Philippines’, thus unable to commit with her drama series. And as much as ABS-CBN wanted Sarah’s series back, she will be too exhausted to continue after her commitment to ‘The Voice’.
