‘Marian’ Ends Tomorrow. Will ‘Bet ng Bayan’ Finally Air on Saturdays Too?

Take a bow, Marian Rivera.

After over five months, ‘Marian’ will officially air its final episode tomorrow. The dance show’s finale will feature a dance number starring Rivera and her fiance Dingdong Dantes, along with highlights of their ‘Despedida de Soltera’.

No third season will be produced, as Rivera expressed the need for rest in preparation of her wedding on December 30.

Debuting on June 21, ‘Marian’ hoped to be GMA’s solution to its ongoing ratings woes on Saturday evenings. Instead, the show failed to live up to the hype, losing on a consistent basis to ABS-CBN rivals ‘The Voice Kids’, ‘Wansapanatym’, and ‘The Voice of the Philippines’ during its run.

While Marian Rivera was undoubtedly GMA’s top female star, the fact that their biggest asset failed to deliver in the ratings may have affected the network’s morale. The truth is, ‘Marian’ was basically intended to keep her on television, but as it turned out, not even her skill in dancing can keep audiences interested.

Looking ahead, GMA will now have a vacancy to fill on their Saturday night lineup come December 13. The question is, will ‘Bet ng Bayan’ fill that void?

When the second season of ‘The Voice of the Philippines’ added a Saturday edition on November 8, it gave GMA a huge mismatch. This forced the Kapuso network to switch the timeslots of both ‘Marian’ and ‘Magpakailanman’ the following week, but even with that change, it still failed to beat the former.

Meanwhile, the first two months of ‘Bet ng Bayan”s run had been uneventful. The reality talent show would have given ‘The Voice of the Philippines’ a run for their money*, but instead, they were handcuffed by the lack of airtime space on Saturday nights, and the extended running time of ‘Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’ on Sunday nights.

That said, getting rid of the 15-minute recap shows on weeknights in favor of a 90-minute episode on Saturday nights should give ‘Bet ng Bayan’ a more competitive spot on weekends. More importantly, it should provide a little more breathing room for GMA Telebabad to thrive upon.

Still, the fate of the vacated timeslot of ‘Marian’ will be up to GMA management. Hopefully they make the right decision as soon as possible.

Note: ‘The Voice of the Philippines’ season 2 debuted on October 26, three weeks after ‘Bet ng Bayan’ premiered.*

  1. I’m rather scared to see the end of Marian coincide with the first landfall of Typhoon “Ruby” tomorrow. This would mean Marian’s finale may not ever be seen on TV, assuring the coverage of the storm.

  2. Regine’s Christmas Serye is slated to replace Marian, but if I were GMA a wedding special coverage for their biggest stars would deem appropriate, like interviews from the sponsors, bridal showers, propsal and wedding itself. That will grab ratings from the Voice.

    • Sayang. That Christmas serye of Regine won’t go up against ABS’ Give Love on Christmas. Just too many bad breaks for GMA.

A reality show leading to DongYan’s wedding seems a good idea, but that may be too much of an exposure. They’d been just fine with just one two-hour long wedding special instead of a four-episoder.

Honestly, Bet ng Bayan vs. The Voice PH would have been an interesting battle. Reality talent show vs. reality talent show. GMA would have loved this idea. Just too many politics, though.

      • Well Regine’s Christmas Serye includes Ariel Rivera who is under contract with ABS, the only reason ABS let him is if this project is aired on weekends since he is doing Bagito. Bet ng Bayan will not stand a chance against The Voice. The DongYan wedding reality miniseries will be perfect, it cant be over exposure since 1, its only happening one time and two the materials needed is already there. Plus it wont count as over exposure since like what you said they are only doing Marian to keep Marian Rivera in the boob tube. Its the most anticipated wedding since JudyAnn and Ryan which opt for a private wedding.

      • Good point. That reality miniseries would have brought the house down, for sure. Then again, GMA opted for a Christmas serye which is not bad, but still not enough to curtail their declining ratings.

      • Another option is to cut KMJS’ running time, air BNB on Saturdays and Sundays, and the ChristmasSerye on Sundays. We can get rid of the 15-minute BNB recaps on weeknights since it’s a waste of time and money for them.

The end (that was under the radar by the time of its first publication) of a PEP article regarding the only live episode of ‘Marian’ first revealed the show’s end date – that’s today – and this means the end of the show was planned in advance to allow for the DongYan “royal” wedding.

It is very likely that the announcement of the show that will replace ‘Marian’ on its timeslot will come after that date.

GMA should shorten the timeslot of Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho and extend Bet ng Bayan. A news magazine show should only last for an hour.

Manny Pacquiao’s Sports Science will air another episode tomorrow night on SNBO.

    • Lalo na BNB is on the semifinal stage. However, like what marcus said, BNB won’t stand a chance against The Voice PH, so even cutting KMJS’ airtime won’t help matters.

    • Nameless says:

Kaya naman masyado nang mahaba ang timeslot siguro ng KMJS, because ‘yun na lang ang show na nagpapataas ng viewership ng Kapuso network. 😥 I’m not watching it anymore as I prefer the Inside Edition eh.

      • Too many stories and longer airtime is overkill for GMA. Kahit sabihin pa natin na multi-awarded ang KMJS, it puts a lot of strain on GMA’s other programs.

  5. James Ty III says:

Marcus, you have a point. But still, airing too many stories in a news magazine show could make it more boring. Rated K has been more successful because it’s more fast-paced.

  6. James Ty III says:

By the way, I saw a press release on Sunday All-Stars in today’s Philippine Star and it mentions that Basil Valdez and Joey de Leon are among the guests today. Baka next Sunday pa ang FHM production number ni Andrea Torres.

GMA will also most likely air a special coverage of Typhoon Ruby during the movie blocks from 11 am to 2 pm and then again from 3:30 pm until tne end of 24 Oras.

GMA News TV will continue the Ruby coverage at 8 pm after Idol sa Kusina. No new feature on Reel Time in their FB page.

  7. James Ty III says:

I was just informed that GMA will still air movies today on its regular time slots but expect occasional updates on Ruby. Even during Sunday All-Stars, may update din about the typhoon kapag may commercial break.

  8. Nameless says:

Natapos na rin ang napaka-floppy show niya ever on TV. The concept of “Marian” was just like the ” Sarah G. Live”.

Speaking of “Marian”‘s, mala-bridal shower na farewell episode, nakaka-disappoint lang ‘yung nangyari sa Eat Bulaga last Saturday, during their pa-bridal shower surprise para kay Marian, at ‘nung nasa final surprise part na sila JoWaPao, bigla na lang pinutol ang airtime nila, at 02:40PM. Sana man lang, pinagbigyan na sila ng GMA for that case, since hindi naman sila madalas mag-overtime araw-araw.

  9. James Ty III says:

Sarah G Live was obviously better than Marian. It’s just that SGL was more like a primetime version of ASAP.

As for KMJS, I agree with you that it’s becoming too long for comfort. But GMA has no choice because Jessica Soho is the only person capable of giving GMA high ratings on Sundays.

  10. James Ty III says:

GMA is airing a documentary on Pope Francis tomorrow on SNBO. It will be dubbed in Tagalog and hosted by Jessica Soho. Not sure if GMA is airing the Miss World 2014.

  11. James Ty III says:

I know. The problem is that GMA does not have money to air the Miss World kahit slightly delayed kasi madaling araw ng Lunes ito gagawin sa Pilipinas.
