ABS-CBN, TV5, GMA to Simultaneously Air Pacquiao-Mayweather Fight

The ‘Big Three’ stations will now join forces for the much-anticipated super-fight of the century.

It was announced by Solar Sports that the bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be aired simultaneously on free TV via ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5. Solar is expected to retain production rights for the fight, but the three stations are also expected to send in their respective broadcast teams within weeks of the fight.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will still be screened live in theaters and arenas throughout the country via Solar All-Access. In addition, both SkyCable and Cignal will produce a pay-per-view feed.

The radio coverage of the fight will still be exclusive to GMA’s radio division.

The simultaneous airing of the fight on Channels 2, 5 and 7 should help Solar Sports a lot in terms of shouldering the burden. After all, Wilson Tieng and company spent over P400 million just to acquire the exclusive broadcast rights for the fight, which is very costly to say the least.

Setting aside a long-standing rivalry for a major non-news event is no longer new for the ‘Big Three’. Three years ago, a musical tribute concert for the late Dolphy was aired on ABS-CBN, TV5 and GMA at the same time.

This is definitely a watershed moment in Philippine television, one that will still be discussed well after the fight is over. The three networks may have been rivals for a long while, but collaborating for a mega-fight of epic proportions should help unite Filipinos in support of its greatest hero.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, dubbed ‘Battle for Greatness’, commences on May 3 Manila time.

From the Tube’s 2015 Holy Week Retreat

From the Tube will be off the air throughout Holy Week. Regular programming resumes after the Easter weekend.

From the Tube will again sign off this Holy Week.

As part of a tradition commemorating the death, sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus Christ, no new posts on From the Tube will be published throughout Holy Week. Regular programming will resume after the Easter weekend.

As it has been the case in previous Lenten observances, most television stations will either air limited programming with mostly religious themes, or sign off from Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday. Radio stations will either have limited playlists or sign off for the aforementioned three days.

All regular programming should resume this Easter Sunday. As for the upcoming Holy Week schedules on the small screen, click this post from Timow’s Turf for more information.

With that, From the Tube will like to wish everyone a blessed Holy Week. For those traveling to faraway places, stay safe and enjoy this respite.

Overshadowed By Willie, InstaDad Finally Premieres on Easter Sunday

The announcement of Willie Revillame’s return on GMA may have caught the cast of ‘InstaDad’ off-guard.

After all, the upcoming weekly drama was supposed to premiere last Sunday, if not for a breaking news announcement that shook the entire country. But with Willie returning to the limelight in a few weeks, GMA decided to make a revision to their plan.

As a result, the pilot episode of ‘InstaDad’ will now be seen this Easter Sunday. It may be long overdue, but for Kapuso fans, it would be worth the wait.

‘InstaDad’ stars Gabby Eigenmann as a popular chef and eligible bachelor. In the main plot, Kenneth (Eigenmann) opted to stay single after breaking up with his first love, but then learned that he had three daughters in Marikit (Gabbi Garcia), Mayumi (Ash Ortega) and Maaya (Jazz Ocampo).

The three daughters’ contrasting personalities will pose a huge challenge to Kenneth as he tries to raise all of them by himself. Along with their adjustment to a new set-up, they must also deal with a variety of issues regarding both teenage and family life.

Joining ‘InstaDad’ in supporting roles are Matet de Leon, Juancho Triviño and Prince Villanueva. The series will be directed by Neal del Rosario.

‘InstaDad’ marks the return of Sunday afternoon dramas on GMA. Their last such drama was ‘TeenGen’, which ended two years ago.

For a network whose programming on Sunday afternoons has been mostly mediocre (thank you ‘Kapuso Movie Festival’ and ‘GMA Blockbusters’), ‘InstaDad’ is one program badly need to wake up a rather sleepy block. Then again, with ABS-CBN’s and ‘The Buzz’ getting in the way, it remains to be seen if the viewers finally woke up to GMA’s senses.

Still, ‘InstaDad’ is a good first step for GMA to reestablish some order into their Sunday lineup. This is definitely a must for the Kapuso network, since they have been heavily criticized of late for their poor programming options, especially on Sundays.

And with ‘Wowowin’ coming up, who knows what will happen next.

‘InstaDad’ airs every Sunday at 4:30 p.m. starting April 5.
