Encantadia 2016: A Threat or an Afterthought

It will be the Sang’gres of ‘Encantadia’ against Cardo (Coco Martin) of ‘Ang Probinsyano’.

A lot has been said about the impressive ratings of ABS-CBN’s ‘Ang Probinsyano’. After all, this TV adaptation of the classic Fernando Poe, Jr. flick has been reaching the 40% mark of late, blowing out its embarrassed competitor (GMA’s ‘Poor Señorita’) in the dust.

But as ‘Encantadia’ gets underway this Monday, ‘Ang Probinsyano”s momentum could be in doubt. And GMA is going all out in this costly venture of theirs.

The 2016 version of ‘Encantadia’ will be headlined by the four Sang’gres, portrayed by Glaiza de Castro (as Pirena), Kylie Padilla (as Amihan), Gabbi Garcia (as Alena), and Sanya Lopez (as Danaya). Other notable cast members include Marian Rivera, Rocco Nacino, Solenn Heussaff, Ruru Madrid, John Arcilla and Dingdong Dantes.

Director Mark Reyes will breathe new life into this iconic fantaserye. Once again, computer-generated imagery (CGI) will be used extensively, but for this version, updated editing software will be used, along with various other technologies.

But the biggest question surrounding ‘Encantadia’ is whether or not GMA will finally embrace the 16:9 widescreen high definition format. Considering GMA’s continued unwillingness to use the new format (even with the use of HD cameras), it is clear that their old-school mentality may hurt ‘Encantadia”s quality and appeal.

Which is why the Encantadia Saga Facebook fan page went as far as writing an open letter to GMA management. They claimed that using the 16:9 format will bring a full viewing experience to an epic program such as ‘Encantadia’, as opposed to 4:3 which cuts some of the details.

Still, the biggest question surrounding ‘Encantadia’ is whether or not it will be able to overcome ‘Ang Probinsyano’. That said, the first week of the new ‘Encantadia’ will be very crucial, as they try to make an impact against an extremely formidable opponent.

Come this Monday, it will be ‘Encantadia’ against the world. Will they come out on top, or become the latest victim of ‘Ang Probinsyano”s dominance?

Find out starting July 18.

  1. Wednesdays are considered your day off but considering the necessity and urgency… eto nga.

For me, dikit na laban ang outlook between the hype of their beloved fantaserye and the nakasanayan na action fantaserye.

If they truly projected in full HD, 16:9 glory, 11 years of worth the wait.

Come Monday, the ratings and the advertising revenue race will determine the effectiveness of each.

    • However, with GMA’s recent penchant of not airing episode teasers of teleseryes after the first one or two weeks, that would hurt Encantadia. That said, if they badly want the series to succeed, they need to stop this nonsense resistance at once. It’s all or nothing for Gozon and co.

Most loyal Kapuso fans suggest to remake Encantadia on their Facebook Fanpage. So they give a chance of their fans to return a new Encantadia. But in my prediction, that is not the solution to recoup in their TV Ratings. Accept the fact GMA loyal viewers, it may last this show for only 4 to 5 months.

    • The truth is, GMA’s finances are running low. We’ve been saying this for a long time now. Encantadia is a costly project and yet GMA once again defied logic by producing a new version of it. They might not be able to broadcast in HD if they keep these costly projects moving.

  3. Looks like Gozon’s backwards mentality (airing in 4:3 than 16:9) will hurt Encantadia’s chances against Ang Probinsyano. I will still insist on my remarks na make or break na ang Encantadia 2016 sa magiging future ng GMA in the years to come. If it fails to impress, kasama na yan sa mga nabiktima ng pamamayagpag ni Cardo sa ratings.

  4. Disappointing talaga ang Encantadia 2016 dahil inere ito in 4:3 on TV, at talo pa against Ang Probinsyano for two straight nights.

    July 18: Ang Probinsyano (42.4) / Encantadia (21.0)
    July 19: Ang Probinsyano (44.2) / Encantadia (19.6)

    (all data based from Kantar)

All I can say is Encantadia 2016 is a requel to forget, much like the Marimar remake and the Starstruck return na parehong hindi naimpress ratings-wise.

    • The fact is, Encantadia’s ratings were not even close to what Ang Probinsyano achieved. Ang kasalanan talaga ng GMA is that hindi nila inalagaan at prinotektahan ang Visayas at Mindanao. Pang-Luzon lang talaga sila. Had they addressed their woes down south, hindi sana magiging blowout ang labanan nila.

      • No wonder. GMA’s logic of nationwide ratings = Metro Manila + Urban Luzon and that’s it. ABS might be weak in Metro Manila signal-wise, but they held on to strong performance in most parts of the country, including Visayas and Mindanao.

      • Their RNGs are stable, unlike GMA’s, hence a strong performance in the south.

I won’t be surprised if Encantadia only lasts for two or three months.

  5. RJ says:

GMA is really stubborn. They never surrender against ABSCBN and TV5 because they know that they can beat ABS CBN as soon as possible and they believe that ABS CBN not always wins in every shows.

    • They need to face reality that they won’t win at all. Their only chances of success were animes in the morning and late-night public affairs shows, both of which don’t generate much in terms of viewership and advertisements. In short, they win at the worst possible times.
