Aksyon sa Tanghali’s Biggest Weakness

If there is one noontime newscast not worth watching, it is ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’.

For the most part, the newscast is handled by Raffy Tulfo. But unlike rival big network noontime newscasts such as GMA News TV’s ‘Balitanghali’, DZMM TeleRadyo’s ‘Radyo Patrol Balita Alas-Dose’ and ‘Headline Pilipinas’, and ANC’s ‘Dateline Philippines’, ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’ is treated more like a public service program than a newscast.

The reason: ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’, the ‘Wanted sa Radyo’ spinoff that airs on select episodes of ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’.

‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’ was established sometime following the cancellation of ‘T3 Alliance’, the public service show hosted by Raffy Tulfo and his brothers Ben and Erwin. As mentioned earlier, it is a spinoff of ‘Wanted sa Radyo’, in which it gives all people an opportunity to voice their complaints through Raffy himself.

To be honest, ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’ is not a bad segment. There is nothing wrong about resolving conflicts or incidents, which is the main agenda of ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’.

However, placing it as a segment on ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’ is too much for the said newscast. This led to more potential news reports getting drowned out in favor of ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’.

It would have been better if ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’ becomes a standalone program, and perhaps revive the ‘Wanted’ TV program that once aired on TV5. Or, they could relieve Raffy Tulfo from his anchoring duties and move ‘Wanted sa Radyo’ to noontime so that he can still come to work on that hour.

Overall, ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali”s current form puts them in a more dubious distinction, earning a place on MediaNewser.com’s Dishonor Roll for their 2016 Winners and Losers List. Luchi Cruz-Valdes’ inability to fix this newscast puts ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’ in an unfavorable light compared to its noontime rivals.

But without any suitable replacements, it looks like TV5 will be stuck with not only Raffy Tulfo, but also the public service segment that is ‘Itimbre Mo Kay Tulfo’ for the time being. That said, changes should be in the offing for ‘Aksyon sa Tanghali’, because if this keeps up, the negative accolades will continue to pile up.

Next Up for The Greatest Love: Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa

GMA’s push for movie remakes on television continues.

After the not-so successful run of ‘Sinungaling Mong Puso’ last year, GMA is attempting to turn another classic movie into a hit teleserye. This time, the target is the 1987 film ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’, directed by Ishmael Bernal and starred Maricel Soriano, Lorna Tolentino and Gabby Concepcion.

The TV remake of ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’, to be directed by Gina Alajar and Aya Topacio, will star Julie Anne San Jose, LJ Reyes, Martin del Rosario and Benjamin Alves. They will be joined by Ms. Jean Garcia, Ara Mina, Victor Neri, Allan Paule, Geleen Eugenio, Janna Dominguez and Lharby Policarpio.

In this version of ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’, Santina (Julie Anne) is an orphaned girl who wound up working in a restaurant owned by Diony (Jean). Angeli (LJ) on the other hand is a homeless woman whom Diony later adopted.

Along the way, the lives of both Santina and Angeli took a more drastic turn as they try to gain the attention of Ephraim (Benjamin), Santina’s childhood friend. Both Ephraim and Angeli’s troubled past will also be revealed, both through Diony and Mariz (Ara).

Hype for ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’ has been heavy since its official announcement late last year. In fact, one of the series’ teasers featured a slapping scene involving Santina and Angeli in bathing suits, which set the tone for arguably another of the most seriously-toned series in Philippine television.

Still, despite all the frequent promotion, it remains to be seen if ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’ will give ‘The Greatest Love’ a run for its money. The ABS-CBN series has been on a roll of late thanks to Sylvia Sanchez’s harrowing portrayal of an Alzheimer’s-stricken mother, and for ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’, they will be hard-pressed to match the former’s momentum.

That said, ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa”s first week will be a crucial one. Anyone who have seen the original film will look at it and see if the TV remake is worth watching.

‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’ premieres this Monday after ‘Hahamakin ang Lahat’ on GMA Afternoon Prime.

Basketball TV Is Now a Poor Man’s NBA Premium

There is a changing of the guard on Basketball TV.

Since its first broadcast in 2006, BTV has been the home for numerous top-notch basketball tournaments. Their flagship product is obviously the NBA, but the network has also aired a number of other tournaments, namely the U.S. NCAA, FIBA and the Euroleague.

However, a recent rebrand last year brought in some drastic changes to BTV’s image. Gone were the major global tournaments that made the network stand out, and in their place were local tournaments such as the NAASCU and the ongoing NCRUCLAA men’s basketball competitions.

The additions of the NAASCU and NCRUCLAA to BTV gave both leagues an outlet with which they can expose themselves to a local audience. But at what cost does a pair of not-so famous leagues come in exchange for more recognizable tournaments?

The loss of FIBA tournaments, in particular, should sting BTV a lot. After all, this is the very same station which brought the FIBA game to a local audience, particularly with the return to prominence of Gilas Pilipinas.

Unfortunately, as TV5 president and Gilas coach Chot Reyes decided to give his own network the exclusive rights to all FIBA basketball games, BTV can only watch helplessly as its second most recognizable product gets taken away by a rival outfit. Such a shame for Wilson Tieng and company.

With the loss of FIBA to TV5, Basketball TV’s only source of relevance now is the NBA. At this point, 80% of BTV’s programming consists of the NBA and its related properties such as the NBA D-League and the WNBA.

As for the remaining 20%, these are now allocated to the NAASCU, NCRUCLAA and other future local competitions. In essence, BTV has become a poor man’s NBA Premium based on these numbers.

The future of Basketball TV will depend on how Solar Entertainment can properly maintain the network. If they can no longer do so, perhaps NBA co-rightsholder ABS-CBN Sports can step in and give a helping hand to its troubled rival.

The BTV people knew had an impressively strong lineup. Now, after over a decade, it was nothing but a distant memory, even if the network decides to give local leagues a chance.
