Seems like ABS-CBN has not learned from its 5:00 p.m. issues.
Several months ago, From the Tube made an article about ABS-CBN’s 5:00 p.m. scheduling problems. Three issues were raised in this topic; namely the presence of the ABS-CBN Regional-produced ‘TV Patrol’, the RNGs’ airing of the affected program at around 9:00 a.m. the next day, and its expected poor performance in the Kantar ratings.
Now, ABS-CBN is once again in a bind thanks to a pair of teleseryes that will premiere today. On Kapamilya Gold, ‘The Better Half’ will replace ‘Doble Kara’, while on Primetime Bida, ‘Wildflower’ will become the first teleserye to air at 5:50 since ‘We Will Survive’.
This leaves the game show ‘Minute to Win It’ in a precarious position. With the premiere of ‘Wildflower’ on Primetime Bida, the former has no choice but to move to 5:00 p.m., leaving themselves vulnerable to not only the regionals’ broadcast of ‘TV Patrol’, but also to rival GMA game show ‘Wowowin’.
That said, only the first 30 minutes of ‘Minute to Win It’ will be preempted, leaving the last 15 or 20 minutes for the viewers in the regions to watch. So where will the regional network viewers go to with regards to this predicament?
The most obvious answer is the iWanTV app, which is readily available and has episodes of a majority of ABS-CBN programs uploaded within hours of original broadcast. The only problem with this app though is that not all people have a mobile device, computer or tablet.
Which leaves ABS-CBN with three options to solve this problem. Either they:
- Place the O Shopping or MYX block at 5:00 p.m. and move ‘Minute to Win It’ to before ‘Langit Lupa’
- Produce a ‘TV Patrol’ that focuses solely on Mega Manila and move ‘Minute to Win It’ to before ‘Langit Lupa’
- Cut ‘It’s Showtime”s last 30 minutes and return to a three-teleserye Kapamilya Gold
For all their dominance in the ratings game, the 5:00 p.m. slot is and will always be ABS-CBN’s weak point (this does not include their early morning programs). Unless they do something about it, the affected program’s viewership will remain compromised.
As for ‘The Better Half’ and ‘Wildflower’, this will be an opportunity to sustain ABS-CBN’s winning ways. It’s a challenge that ‘The Better Half”s Shaina Magdayao, Carlo Aquino, JC de Vera and Denise Laurel, and ‘Wildflower”s Maja Salvador and Joseph Marco should welcome despite the network’s scheduling issues.
I don’t know how what broadcast TV Plus receives in the regional areas, they can move regional TV Patrol in the morning. Most provinces will appreciate that. I used to live in Quezon Province, most people watch the morning local news anyways.
Not possible, Mr. Marcus G. They already have a local morning program from their RNG and they have work.
Time and again, the three options provided would be a remedy but then the men in South Triangle’s boardroom are still sticking to the approach of status quo — expanding their sin of greed.
I won’t be surprised to see Minute to Win It end their run sooner than later. Because as it stands, their new timeslot of 5:00 p.m. is like a death sentence. They’re doing well in the previous timeslot, so why screw it up?
As long as ABS continues to fill the 5:00 p.m. slot without knowing the consequences of a regional TV Patrol, their current dominance will be undermined. It’s a shame that even with their status as the country’s top network, they’re making some mistakes as well.
It could be Willie is gaining traction in the provinces since he has history of doing so, there are too much local programming anyway or they could do tv patrol regional over teleradyo. Going back to my life back in the province, life is pretty much slow, there are really no significant news to make such impact and to cover. Life in the province is so laidback and culture is different. I remember one time its the biggest fiesta which can be considered their biggest event, everyone is out on the streets that local channels tend not to cover it live since their audience is all out on the streets celebrating. Plus with the advent of social media, updates about the happenings in the city are much easier to broadcast. Reality is there are no important stories or news items to cover for regional newscasts anyways, intrigues and issues are less feisty
Thing is they seem to decline in importance, but that’s what ABS insists to do, for the love of regional culture and pride. Plus it gives the reporters there the opportunity to shine, one that might not be possible if they choose to go to Manila. It is an advantage that ABS became very proud of, one that GMA cannot replicate at this point.
Like feature and entertainment reporters, RNG pool of staff are getting irrelevant, since social media has arrived. Yan ang impact ng social media sa small cluster ng community. If you live in the province you will know why.
Social media can also complement traditional media though.
We all expected Wildflower to air on Doble Kara’s slot, but word has it that the big wigs liked the previews of the Maja starrer enough to sacrifice the afternoon PBB and Minute’s placement, and forcing the premature entry of The Better Half (which, thankfully, has already taped episodes in advance). Let’s see if this gamble pays off.
Anyway, I see nothing wrong with the RNG’s local newscasts at 5pm. They deserve to have those anyway.
But what’s the point of airing a show at 5:00 p.m. if it will only benefit Metro Manila and nearby viewers? We may be fine with regional newscasts, but not when it drastically sacrifices another show that’s being aired in Metro Manila.
The fact is, ABS is not all perfect, and this scheduling issue is just one of them.
Yung Better Half medyo dark siya para sa daytime. Pang 3rd slot ito. Baket yan napunta sa DK slot? Yung WildFlower parang Passion de Amor.
Then again, so is GMA’s Ika-6 na Utos, Hahamakin ang Lahat and Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa. Nasa daytime sila lahat kahit may pagka-dark na theme. Wala nang restriction pagdating sa mga daytime dramas.
O shopping or Myx at 5pm? Not at all! It will sa ratings suicide. It doesn’t make much difference as Wowowin airs 5p-630p
Probably, but with the regional networks receiving their own versions of TV Patrol, ABS will find it hard to air a game show, another teleserye or reality show in that timeslot due to these circumstances. It’s better for them to sacrifice than to risk it, because it will only make things complicated if they keep the current schedule intact.
Besides, Wowowin only wins in the first half, after that the momentum returns to ABS for the rest of the night.
Didn’t Pangako Sa yo(Kristine Hermosa & Echo version) aired in that timeslot? How did that survive that timesolot?
FYI, the 2000-01 version of Pangako sa ‘Yo aired at around 7:00 or 7:30. ABS-CBN’s schedule then was way different from what it is now. All of their teleseryes then air for just 30 minutes, compared to now where it airs for 45 or 50 minutes.
Hi! If I’m not mistaken, those receiving ABS-CBN in digital (whether via TVplus or a digital-ready TV) in regional areas, they will receive the same show line-up as in Manila. I live in Pampanga, and they have ABS-CBN Pampanga (ch. 46) here. In channel 46, they air TV Patrol Pampanga; while in digital, they air “Minute to Win It” (by the time it was still broadcast).
That should clarify some things. However, Kantar should start including those with digital boxes if ratings are meant to be justified.
Nalalapit na pagtatapos na siya sabi sa commercial. Ano kaya ipapalit nila dito? Yung TPOF lang yata ang may nakabangko na episode.
Wait and see mode na lang muna tayo. ABS has plenty of tricks up their sleeve so let’s give them time to work this out.
The Good Son na yata ang ipapalit. Nagcommercial na kanina. Yung The Promise of Forever lol wala pa rin.
Not all promises are meant to be fulfilled. We’ve seen some future ABS-CBN teleseryes that were produced but never aired due to various complications. In short, huwag muna maniwala sa mga trade fairs at balita tungkol sa mga upcoming programs dahil there’s a possibility na may pagbabago sa cast at istorya, or worse, hindi ito maieere at all. Wait till one of the teleseryes or programs enter their final weeks and see what happens from there.
