Kambal Karibal Starts Tonight, Seeks to Topple La Luna Sangre

KathNiel, meet BiGuel.

It seems like nothing can stop ABS-CBN’s ‘La Luna Sangre’. After all, since it premiered last June it became the second most-watched teleserye in the Philippines behind only ‘Ang Probinsyano’.

Three times GMA has tried to curb the dominance of ‘La Luna Sangre’, and three times they miserably failed. After striking out with ‘My Love from the Star’, ‘Mulawin vs. Ravena’ and ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ season 2, they decided to go fire with fire by going with a supernatural theme and a love team.

Their response is a teleserye titled ‘Kambal Karibal’, starring Bianca Umali and Miguel Tanfelix. In the series, twin sisters Crisanta and Criselda (Bianca) battle for the love of both her family and Diego (Miguel), with the already dead Criselda consumed by Crisanta’s increasing affection for Diego and her mother.

The story begins with the death of Criselda from a rare disease, leaving her spirit behind that only appears to Crisanta. But after Crisanta gains the favor of Diego and her mother, Criselda decides to inhabit another person’s body in an attempt to stop Crisanta from getting the love that she deserves.

‘Kambal Karibal’ also stars Jean Garcia, Marvin Agustin, Alfred Vargas, Carmina Villarroel, Gloria Romero, Christopher De Leon, Jeric Gonzales, Pauline Mendoza, Rafa Siguion Reyna, Sheree, Racquel Montessa, and Kyline Alcantara. Katrina Halili and Gardo Versoza will also play special roles in the series.

If ‘La Luna Sangre”s ratings of over 30% and a disparity of over 15% are any indication, then ‘Kambal Karibal’ is in for a rude awakening. The powerhouse cast of ‘La Luna Sangre’, led by Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla and Kapuso castoffs Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez, continues to wreak havoc, and it will be very difficult for BiGuel to overcome KathNiel.

Nevertheless, the battle between ‘La Luna Sangre’ and ‘Kambal Karibal’ should be an interesting one. Not only will this be a competition between love teams, it will also be a fight between vengeful vampires and possessed spirits.

Directed by Don Michael Perez, ‘Kambal Karibal’ airs weeknights after ‘Super Ma’am’ on GMA Telebabad.

    • Mahirap talagang kalaban ang LLS. Sa simula pa lang nahirapan na ang GMA so what chances do they have in overcoming said series? Kaya good luck na lang sa kanila kung sakaling tumagal ang Kambal Karibal.

So I heard that Kambal Karibal is ending soon (odd considering how less than a week ago GMA was bragging that it beat La Luna Sangre on AGB). Your thoughts on this?

In any case, it appears that LLS ends on March 8 and will be replaced by Bagani, so if KK still continues, it could be in for some trouble.

      • But as 8:20 figures to be a KathNiel/LizQuen-dominated timeslot, GMA should figure out how to lure viewers that were fed up by these two love teams. That’s the only way for them to stay competitive.

Correction: according to the pages, LLS actually ends on March 2, while Bagani premieres on March 5. Looks like Kambal Karibal will be in for a rude awakening soon, unless of course its long-rumored end finally comes.

      • Both KathNiel and LizQuen are simply too hard to stop. GMA doesn’t have the luxury of rising young stars to counter them. They can start announcing its conclusion anytime soon.

I think the best hope for GMA is if they can capitalize on the Bagani casting controversy. If the casting controversy and fallout affects Bagani’s ratings, KK (or its possible replacement) might see an opening. But it will still be an uphill battle. Who kmows: maybe ABS will be the one to enjpy sinigang in the end after all.

Oddly enough, the AGB ratings for late January are out (why the delay, I have no idea): according to them. KK tied with LLS, even beating them on occasion. Of course, since this is AGB, take it with a grain of salt, especially since KK is barely discussed online and it loses badly to LLS on Kantar.

AFAIK, KK was supposed to end like nung March sabi nga dito, pero I think binawi nila (since hindi na bunabanggit sa teasers), and ipapasok nila si Jake Vargas as new character. Mukhang totoo naman yung sinasabi nila na mataas ratings nila (if AGB ratings is concerned). And I think maganda yung ginagawang exposure nila sa show na ‘to comapred to the other shows; remember yung sinasabi mong underexposure na nangyari sa finale week ng Haplos?

They even did a marathon of the series nung Holy Week, which they also did for the teleserye First Time which I know was popular din then.

    • Sorry kung nakalimutan ko to. Anyway, KK got extended but it didn’t make sense since hindi naman maganda ang performance nito sa Kantar. Saka katapat pa nito ang Bagani which stars LizQuen. It wasn’t even close to begin with (double-digit advantage ang Bagani over KK).

Despite all their efforts to promote KK, parang hindi naman siya kinakagat ng masa kahit sabihin nilang successful ito. That said, their extension would have been justified kung nasa 25% or better ang ratings nito sa Kantar. Kaso hanggang 18-20% lang siya whereas Bagani goes around 32-34%.

Like I said elsewhere, I think KK being extended has more to do with a lack of a replacement show and/or ego-boosting than its ratings. Even on AGB it loses more often than not, while on Kantar it’s never won even once. I think they’re extending it because Mitho/Victor Magtanggol/whatever its replacement will be is not yet ready, but also because they need to maintain the story that KK is doing well and that GMA is #1 (even though neither are true).

      • Finances be damned, GMA should have prepared for a KK replacement much earlier. Now they’re paying the consequences. They can’t cancel KK because of that. What are they trying to prove, that KK is as good and as compelling and as long-lasting as Ang Probinsyano? Shame on them.

      • yong says:

In fairness naman these past few days, KK na #1 GMA show siya sa Kantar; yun lang, di sumasampa sa 20-25%.

      • Malas pa rin sila dahil katapat nila ang Bagani which earns around 30%. Not even Bianca Umali and Kyline Alcantara can outshine LizQuen. That most recent extension should be the last dahil as long as LizQuen is there wala silang chance na manalo.
