The Return of Alyas Robin Hood

This is not a rerun.

On Monday, August 14, GMA announced the return of ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ to the small screen. The second season (or Book 2 in teleserye lingo) will bring back almost the same cast with the addition of new actors to spice up the series.

Continuing the same series after a lengthy hiatus is nothing new to Philippine television. In 2007, ABS-CBN’s ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ received a second season after a break of six months; take note that this does not include sequels of a particular series such as the ‘Encantadia’ trilogy or the ‘Lobo’ franchise.

The new season of ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ will once again be headlined by Dingdong Dantes as Pepe, the former vigilante-turned-lawyer. New challenges await the protagonist, such as the kidnapping of his mother, the revelation of some of his secrets, and a powerful evil force that threatens the city.

Andrea Torres will reprise the role of Venus, Pepe’s ally and love interest. But instead of bringing back Megan Young’s character Sarri for season 2, GMA brought in Solenn Heussaff to portray Pepe’s other love interest, Iris.

Also returning for season 2 will be Ms. Jaclyn Jose, who will once again breathe life to Pepe’s mother Judy. Rounding out the mix of returning and new cast members are Ruru Madrid, Edu Manzano, Gary Estrada, Paolo Contis, Jay Manalo, Rey ‘PJ’ Abellana, Gio Alvarez, KC Montero, Lindsay de Vera, Dave Bornea, Rob Moya, Antonette Garcia and Luri Nalus.

The first season of ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ ran from September 19, 2016 to February 24, 2017. The series, while a decent performer with 115 episodes in total, could not get past ‘Magpahanggang Wakas’, ‘A Love to Last’ and ‘My Dear Heart’ in the ratings.

On its second season, ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ will go up against the KathNiel-led series ‘La Luna Sangre’. Considering that the latter is raking in at least 35% in the national ratings of late, ‘Alyas Robin Hood”s task became even more difficult now that they face the popular tandem of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla (not to mention former GMA star Richard Gutierrez).

Still, for loyal followers of ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ who stuck through the difficult times, the return of the series is like a breath of fresh air. With GMA keeping the faith, one can only hope that the second season of ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ will last just as long as the first.

TV5’s New Shows Premiere This Quarter of 2015

The blanks have been filled once again on TV5.

Two brand new shows premiered on the Kapatid network today. ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’, hosted by RR Enriquez, LJ Moreno-Alapag, Danica Sotto-Pingris and Jeck Maierhofer, and ‘Solved na Solved’, hosted by Arnell Ignacio, Gelli de Belen and TV5 legal expert Atty. Mel Sta. Maria, debuted following the conclusion of the network’s coverage of Pope Francis in Manila earlier this morning.

Tomorrow will see two other shows make their way into the TV5 lineup. The local version of the Australian kids’ show ‘Hi-5’ premieres at 8:30 a.m., while ‘Healing Galing’, a spinoff of the Radyo5 program hosted by Dr. Edinell Calvario, will air at 10:00 a.m. with Hayden Kho as co-host.

The Padilla brothers (Robin, Rommel and BB Gandanghari) will join forces on the sitcom ‘2 1/2 Daddies’, which will air starting this Saturday at 8:00 p.m.. Another sitcom, this time starring Derek Ramsay and Empoy Marquez, will be titled ‘Mac and Chiz’ and will air starting this Sunday at 8:00 p.m.

A pair of talent shows will also spice up TV5’s weekend programming. ‘Move It’, a dance show hosted by Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Tom Taus, premieres this Sunday at 7:00 p.m., while ‘Rising Stars’, a singing competition show hosted by Ogie Alcasid and Venus Raj, will be aired next month.

A new season of ‘Wattpad Presents’ will also see the light of day, as new love stories featuring television’s rising young talents will be featured starting tonight at 9:00 p.m. And for those in need of love advice, call Papa Jack and his new show ‘Call Me Papa Jack’, which airs starting this Saturday at 10:00 p.m.

Still to come for the Kapatid network are:

• ‘E5’, a showbiz, lifestyle and fashion show hosted by KC Montero, Grace Lee, Tim Yap, IC Mendoza and Divine Lee
• ‘Extreme Challenge: Kaya Mo Ba ‘To’, an adventure reality show hosted by Derek Ramsay and features select teams of ‘The Amazing Race Philippines 2’
• ‘No Harm No Foul’, a sitcom starring Ogie Alcasid, Ritz Azul and several PBA players
• ‘Kontrabando’, a news satire show hosted by Ramon Bautista, Lourd de Veyra, Jun Sabayton and RA Rivera
• ‘Last School Standing’, a game show featuring the top high schools in the country

This is definitely a good start for TV5 in 2015. That said, expect the network to plug in more holes as the weeks go on, as they look to stabilize their programming lineup for this year.

When MTV Ruled the Philippines

Before MYX came along, there was MTV, a network focused only on music videos.

Before MYX became the ultimate destination for local and foreign music videos, Filipinos tuned in to MTV. Originally a block-timer with Studio 23 in the late 1990s, MTV spun off in 2001 and took over full-time on Channel 41 through the Nation Broadcasting Company. This forced ABS-CBN to make a channel of their own, which eventually became MYX. Soon after viewership on MTV Philippines grew, in large part to charismatic VJs such as KC Montero, Sarah Meier and Belinda Panelo.

MTV Philippines prospered thanks to its broadcast of major events such as the Video Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards, MTV Asia Awards, and the MTV Pilipinas Awards. But more than just music videos, MTV also provided both animated and live action programs produced by the US MTV. In addition, MTV Philippines also launched the VJ Hunt, where they search for potential talent for future shows. The popularity of MTV in the Philippines proved to be final nail in the coffin of Channel V Philippines, and the then-GMA owned network was cancelled midway through 2001.

Unfortunately, the popularity of YouTube and the widespread availability of MYX in the country would doom MTV Philippines, and in 2007 free TV broadcast of MTV Philippines was shut down by NBC. MTV Philippines continued to air on cable until 2010, when it was shut down for good in favor of MTV Southeast Asia. The closure of MTV in the Philippines coincided with the shift of MTV’s content in the US, where less music videos were aired in favor of more original programming, such as Jersey Shore.

Despite the demise of MTV, it remained influential to many Filipinos. MTV was the first full-time network in the country to air music videos on most hours, in order to promote an artist or band’s work. It also introduced Filipinos to the video jockey or VJ, and their exposure to television helped them land more lucrative hosting jobs elsewhere. MTV also provided directors an opportunity to learn their craft, and in doing so, helped them earn praise and adulation from viewers. Finally the content aired on MTV was essential in exposing the viewer to the realms of adult reality television, helping it stand out from others.

While MTV is gone, it will never be forgotten. MTV proved to be a standardbearer for all music channels. And if not for MTV, MYX would not have become a preeminent music video channel it is today.
