The Month of Beauty Pageants: Miss World on GMA, Miss Universe on ABS-CBN

It has been an eventful month for Filipinas in various beauty pageants.

The Miss Earth pageant, an event dominated by Filipinas of late, was won by Karen Ibasco. Then in the Reina Hispanoamericana, Winwyn Marquez provided the upset of the year by becoming the first Filipina to win the pageant in the country’s debut appearance.

In the Miss Globe pageant, Nelda Ibe finished first runner-up, while Elizabeth Clenci earned a second runner-up finish in the 2017 Miss Grand International. Unfortunately, Mariel de Leon failed to maintain the Philippines’ momentum in beauty pageants as she was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 2017 Miss International.

Nevertheless, the Philippines still has four more beauty pageants to participate before the year ends. Two of them will take place this month and both seem to be the most prestigious of them all.

This Saturday, November 18, the 2017 Miss World will take place in Sanya, China. The Philippines will be represented by Laura Lehmann, a former Binibining Pilipinas participant and UAAP courtside reporter.

The 2017 Miss World will be aired on GMA, albeit on a delayed basis. That said, spoiler alerts are expected to come in social media due to GMA’s loaded programming situation.

Then on November 27, the Miss Universe pageant will take place in Las Vegas. Representing the Philippines will be Rachel Peters, a Filipina-British beauty.

ABS-CBN and FOXlife will share the exclusive Philippine rights to the 2017 Miss Universe. The said pageant will broadcast live at around 8:00 a.m.

Rounding up the 2017 beauty pageant season are the Miss Supranational and the Miss Intercontinental pageants. Chanel Thomas and Katarina Rodriguez will represent the country in their respective pageants, which will take place on December 1 and December 21.

Neither pageant will be aired on television, however. Nevertheless, expect the two representatives to exude the same pride and determination that this month’s achievers accomplished.

Looking ahead to the Miss World and Miss Universe, it will be interesting to see how Laura Lehmann and Rachel Peters fare in their respective pageants. With all the momentum in the Philippines’ favor, one can only hope that the two will have what it takes to bag another crown for the country.

In 100 Words: Tragedy in Vegas

Totally gruesome and tragic.

Gunfire enveloped a music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada early Monday morning (Monday afternoon in Manila). When the smoke was cleared, around 60 people were killed and over 500 more were wounded.

Even news networks in the Philippines can’t help but feel a tragic sense of loss for the victims. Throughout most of the day, attention shifted to the incident in Las Vegas, where they kept an eye on the latest updates surrounding the worst mass shooting in American history.

It remains to be seen if there are Filipino victims in this horrible attack. For now, stay tuned to CNN Philippines, the ABS-CBN News Channel, GMA News TV and DZMM TeleRadyo for more updates on the Las Vegas shooting, and to see if Filipinos were affected in this incident.

Pacquiao, Donaire Fight on the Same Night Sunday

Two for the price of one.

On Sunday, November 6 (Saturday, November 5 Las Vegas time), two of the Philippines’ best pugilists will fight on the same night. That’s right, for the first time ever, Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire will be on one card together.

The headline attraction will pit Pacquiao against Jessie Vargas for the WBO Welterweight title. Prior to that, Donaire will defend his WBO Super Bantamweight title against unbeaten Jessie Magdaleno.

Both Pacquiao and Donaire are considered one of the best boxers in the world. Their fights have become the stuff of legend, and each have the titles to back their claim.

However, they have never shared the same stage. That is, until this Sunday in Las Vegas.

For Pacquiao, his return to the ring came unexpectedly. After defeating Timothy Bradley in April, he initially announced his retirement in order to focus as a politician, but despite winning a seat in the Senate (with mostly negative reviews from critics), Pacquiao decided to give boxing another shot.

For Donaire, it will be his third defense of the WBO Super Bantamweight title he won over Cesar Juarez in December of last year. Two weeks after Pacquiao’s victory over Bradley, Donaire successfully defended his belt against Zsolt Bedak.

As far as the Philippine broadcast rights go, that honor goes to Solar Entertainment and GMA Network, since Pacquiao is tagged as the headliner in this card. It will air on a delayed basis on GMA and Solar Sports, and live on Super Radyo DZBB 594 and all cable and satellite pay-per-view outlets.

For Donaire, it will be his first fight since 2009’s bout with Rafael Concepcion (which coincidentally aired on GMA) in which ABS-CBN does not have any television rights. The said network has owned the rights to all Top Rank cards that do not involve Pacquiao since 2010.

With two of the Philippines’ top-ranked boxers fighting on the same night, expect the millions to congregate and watch this unprecedented event blow-by-blow. But like Pacquiao’s last fight with Bradley, it remains to be seen if there are still believers in the Pacman.
