A Look Back at News Coverage of the Resorts World Manila Attack

Friday’s incident at Resorts World Manila was headline news for journalists throughout the country. (Photo credit: ABS-CBN News)

Tragedy strikes on the first Friday of June.

On June 2, 2017, gunshots and fire broke out at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City. When it was all said and done, 37 people were found dead through suffocation, and the gunman, later identified as former Department of Finance employee Jessie Carlos, shot and immolated himself to death.

Here is how the country’s major news outfits fare with the coverage of the incident.

ABS-CBN News Channel and DZMM TeleRadyo

The burden of ABS-CBN News’ coverage was shared between DZMM TeleRadyo and the ABS-CBN News Channel. Both networks went on breaking news mode the moment the attack at Resorts World Manila struck.

ANC and DZMM continued to provide updates of the tragedy over the next 24 hours, with the former somehow eschewing its regular programs in favor of the generic ‘ANC Live’ brand beginning at 11:30 a.m. DZMM continued to air its regular programs but on occasion it gave way to special coverage of the said incident.

GMA News TV

GMA News TV’s coverage began through its simulcast of DZBB shows ‘Saksi sa Dobol B’, ‘Sino?’ and ‘Dobol A sa Dobol B’. Their marathon continued through ‘News to Go’ and ‘Balitanghali’.

The network essentially preempted all regular programming in favor of TV shopping blocks for much of the afternoon. In between, newscasts such as ‘Quick Response Team’, ‘Balita Pilipinas’ and ‘State of the Nation’ continued to update on the situation.

CNN Philippines

While CNN Philippines is a 24/7 station (at least for cable and satellite subscribers), the network’s coverage at Resorts World Manila did not begin until 6:00 a.m. once ‘New Day’ kicked in. From that point on, CNN Philippines went on three different phases.

First, the network’s early morning coverage was aired in English, followed by a Filipino language marathon of the incident during the late morning through early afternoon. After that, English language coverage resumed all the way till the deep part of the evening, with some regular programming in between.

News5

Unfortunately, Luchi Cruz-Valdes’ outfit failed to deliver when it mattered most. Although Radyo5 92.3 FM (and by extension AksyonTV) provided some breaking news on the Resorts World Manila tragedy, the networks continued to air regular programming as if nothing had happened.

Even the ‘Aksyon’ newscasts on TV5 had a bad outing as well. Considering that the newscasts only have at least an hour of airtime (not to mention Raffy Tulfo’s penchant to do some extracurricular activities not related to news), it is clear that LCV and company have too little to offer with a meager cast and limited time.

The next two days saw further updates of the Resorts World Manila tragedy, but other than that, it was all back to normal programming. Additional press conferences at the Resorts World Manila, including the revelation of the gunman’s name, were a few highlights of the weekend.

Overall, it was a field day for major news networks in the country. But while Ging Reyes, Marissa Flores and Armie Jarin-Bennett have done a pretty good job putting all the work in dealing with the Resorts World Manila tragedy, the same cannot be said for Luchi Cruz-Valdes, and it’s a shame.

When tragedy strikes, somebody must take action. And in times like this, news networks and other related organizations should be first on the scene to deliver the news and bring up-to-date reports to everyone.

TV5 Must Revamp Primetime Lineup

Odd one out: For TV5 to become truly alternative anew, they need to retire 'Aksyon Prime' for good and go with 'Aksyon Tonite' as their lone evening newscast. (Logo courtesy of TV5)

Odd one out: TV5’s primetime revamp may require ‘Aksyon Prime’ to merge with ‘Aksyon Tonite’. (Logo courtesy of TV5)

It is clear that TV5’s primetime lineup is going nowhere.

Questions abound the said lineup once Chot Reyes made it clear that he envisioned a more ‘alternative’ approach for the network. For instance, ‘Aksyon Prime’ and ‘Aksyon Tonite’ now seem out of place in Chot’s new approach, due to its ‘masa’-fied format and competition with ABS-CBN and GMA newscasts.

To make matters worse, ‘Aksyon Tonite’ recently added unproven journos in Lia Cruz and Marga Vargas, both of whom seem more suited to sports than news. And finally, PBA’s overall poor showing last season leave a lot to be desired.

With all problems considered, here is a to-do list that TV5 must do to revamp its primetime lineup.

1. Merge and Reformat Aksyon Prime and Aksyon Tonite

Two evening newscasts were too much for News5, considering the plight it endured of late. Thus, merging both ‘Aksyon Prime’ and ‘Aksyon Tonite’ into one nightly newscast is a necessity.

If that’s not enough, this merged newscast will employ a more hard news approach, and will air at 9:00 p.m. Hence, it will compete against CNN Philippines’ ‘Newsroom’, GMA News TV’s ‘State of the Nation’, ANC’s ‘The World Tonight’, and other similar newscasts.

As for the anchors and title, look no further. The newscast will carry the ‘Aksyon Tonite’ name, and Ed Lingao and Luchi Cruz-Valdes will be the anchors.

2. Replace Aksyon Prime with Sports360

The PBA games are a regular fixture on TV5 during weeknights, but the presence of ‘Aksyon Prime’ became a bane to viewers and game attendants. Placing ‘Sports360’ instead should alleviate this burden.

The format of ‘Sports360’ will remain the same. It will air for 15 minutes, and will focus mostly on viewer interaction and game analysis.

3. Foreign Canned Shows from 6 to 9 on Non-PBA Game Days

Finally, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on a non-PBA game day will be dominated by TV5’s American action, suspense and fantasy shows. Doesn’t get more alternative than this.

Chot Reyes’ vision of a more ‘alternative’ TV5 may take time getting used to. But as far as the primetime lineup goes, solving this dilemma should be the first step, provided that management is smart enough to realize its flaws.

However, it doesn’t mean that this proposal will be achieved. Still, one can only hope that Chot Reyes will make the soundest of decisions in order to restore TV5’s fortunes, even if it means no more local entertainment fare.

Three’s a Crowd: Aksyon Tonite Becomes a Three-Anchor Team

Looks like the solo anchor setup on ‘Aksyon’ newscasts is not working for News5.

Last Monday, News5 decided to once again revamp ‘Aksyon Tonite’, adding erstwhile weather reporters Lia Cruz and Marga Vargas to the newscast alongside Ed Lingao. Both Lia and Marga were intended to be ‘anchors in training’ as far as News5 is concerned.

This marked the first time that ‘Aksyon Tonite’ went with a three-anchor setup. Past lineups of the newscast featured either a two-anchor setup (Paolo Bediones/Ed Lingao and Cheryl Cosim) or a solo anchor setup (Ed Lingao).

The reaction to the move was mostly negative. They argued that Lia and Marga were the latest in a line of ‘entertainers masquerading as journalists’ (EMAJ), as the two lacked any journalistic background owing to their past experience as sports reporters (Lia for Solar Sports, Marga for ABC-5).

While Lia and Marga’s addition to ‘Aksyon Tonite’ serves to develop the two into well-rounded journalists, it is clear that News5 is once again dooming themselves with these questionable moves. A rundown of other late primetime newscasts on major privately-owned networks should show the foolishness of News5’s decision.

  • Bandila (ABS-CBN) – Julius Babao, Karen Davila, Ces Drilon
  • Saksi (GMA) – Pia Arcangel, Arnold Clavio
  • Newsroom (CNN Philippines) – Mitzi Borromeo
  • State of the Nation (GMA News TV) – Jessica Soho
  • Eagle News International (Net 25) – Alma Angeles, Sam Cepeda
  • Why News (UNTV News and Rescue) – Gerry Alcantara, Darlene Basingan, Diego Castro III
  • The World Tonight (ANC) – Tina Monzon-Palma

The list above shows that all listed anchors are indeed legitimate journalists. Too bad for News5 and its head Luchi Cruz-Valdes.

Going down the EMAJ route just to revamp ‘Aksyon Tonite’ should serve as a way to destroy its once-credible aura. When the newscast was anchored by Cheryl Cosim and Ed Lingao, many praised it for its emphasis on hard news, which helped restore its credibility that was lost during Paolo Bediones’ time.

Now that they promoted Lia Cruz and Marga Vargas to serve alongside Ed Lingao, expect that praise to turn against ‘Aksyon Tonite’. They may be added just to gain experience, but unless they grow and learn quickly, they might become the next Menchu Macapagal or Hillary Isaac.

Love Anover’s Yolanda Story on Magpakailanman

While ABS-CBN News reporter Atom Araullo‘s brave journey at the height of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) became a hot topic in the media, other news reporters endured similar paths while in the line of duty. And in tomorrow’s episode of ‘Magpakailanman‘ one such reporter shares her own story of survival.

In the upcoming episode ‘Sa Mata ng Daluyong’, GMA News reporter Love Anover will share her story on overcoming the strong winds and heavy rains of a typhoon, with Sunshine Dizon playing Anover. The episode airs after the sitcom ‘Vampire Ang Daddy Ko’.

Anover’s story was barely noticed in social media, as netizens focused on Araullo’s daring stand and Mike Enriquez’s snub of Jiggy Manicad’s report at the end of ‘24 Oras‘. Nevertheless, the upcoming episode of ‘Magpakailanman’ should inform the viewers on the risks of news reporting during natural disasters, in the process helping aspiring reporters prepare when thrust in a disastrous situation.

As a precursor of tomorrow’s episode, here was Anover and fellow reporter Jiggy Manicad narrating their harrowing experiences during the November 8 newscast of GMA News TV’s ‘State of the Nation’. The video can be seen below.

GMA, ABS-CBN Tied for Best TV Station at the 2013 PMPC Star Awards

Marian Rivera and Coco Martin (tied with Richard Yap) won the top acting awards for drama in the 2013 PMPC Star Awards for TV.

In the recently concluded PMPC Star Awards for TV, both ABS-CBN and GMA shared honors for best TV station this year. And even though both stations were tied for the top television award, it was ABS-CBN who grabbed a lion’s share of awards thanks to some of their highly-rated programs and impressive performances from its stars.

ABS-CBN earned 31 of the 56 awards in the recent event. Among the winners were Kapamilya stars Coco Martin and Richard Yap (Best Drama Actor), KC Concepcion (Best Drama Supporting Actress), Arjo Atayde and Arron Villaflor (Best Drama Supporting Actor), and Nikki Gil (Best Single Performance for an Actress). Programs such as Juan dela Cruz (Best Primetime Drama Series), Be Careful with My Heart (Best Daytime Drama Series), Showtime (Best Variety Show), ASAP (Best Musical Variety Show), Umagang Kay Ganda (Best Morning Show) and Kris TV (Best Celebrity Talk Show) were also cited.

Not to be outdone, GMA stars such as Marian Rivera (Best Drama Actress), Rufa Mae Quinto (Best Comedy Actress) and Michael V (Best Comedy Actor) were also honored. In addition, GMA programs such as Pepito Manaloto (Best Comedy Show), Bubble Gang (T-Best Gag Show), Celebrity Bluff (Best Game Show), Startalk (Best Showbiz Oriented Talk Show), Magpakailanman (Best Drama Anthology), and the now-defunct Extra Challenge (Best Reality Competition Program) also won their respective awards. Sister network GMA News TV also left victorious thanks to wins by State of the Nation (Best News Program), Biyahe ni Drew (Best Travel Show), I Juander (Best Magazine Show), and Fashbook host Solenn Heussaff (Best Lifestyle Show Host).

While ABS-CBN and GMA dominated the proceedings, some of the minor TV networks were also cited. TV5 walked away with three awards, winning Best Children’s Show for Batibot, Best Talent Search Program for Talentadong Pinoy, and Best Female Showbiz Oriented Talk Show Host for Ang Latest host Cristy Fermin. And the lone award won by a UHF television station came from Net 25, whose program Convergence won Best Lifestyle Show.

The PMPC Star Awards were held last November 24 at the AFP Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, and were hosted by the Gutierrez twins (Richard and Raymond) and the Gonzaga sisters (Toni and Alex). The entire awards ceremony will be seen this Sunday on ABS-CBN’s ‘Sunday’s Best‘. And for the entire list of awardees, click here

TV Coverage of Typhoon Yolanda

One of the many houses damaged during the landfall of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Visayas region. Haiyan is perhaps the strongest recorded typhoon in history, with a 315 kph wind.

Last night the Philippines experienced the wrath of Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda). The 315 kph typhoon struck much of Visayas, and even brought strong winds in Southern and Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and Northern Mindanao, leaving nearly 60 casualties and counting. And every news outlet were there to cover the storm.

The ABS-CBN News Channel, DZMM TeleRadyo, GMA News TV, AksyonTV and Solar News Channel extensively covered the news of the typhoon last Friday. However, during the afternoon press conference at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, only the ANC, DZMM TeleRadyo, SNC and GNTV were willing to air the live proceedings, while AksyonTV continued with the Radyo5 hookup of ‘Wanted sa Radyo’ and ‘Cristy FerMinute’. While AksyonTV did give way to breaking news on the NDRRMC press conference, their reluctance to air the press conference rather than continuing with their radio hookup still befuddles viewers.

ABS-CBN, TV5 and GMA also provided up-to-date reports on the storm during their newscasts. That said, it was a busy day for the writers, producers, anchors, reporters and cameramen who were present in covering the latest reports on Typhoon Yolanda. However, two lasting images involving news reporters stand out.

The first image came during ABS-CBN reporter Atom Araullo‘s report in Tacloban, where he braved the strong winds and heavy rains in order to provide the latest updates on the storm. Araullo first reported on the situation during ‘Umagang Kay Ganda’, but it was during ‘TV Patrol’ where his gutsy reporting became the talk of social media. Even CNN and various others news outlets around the world reported on Araullo’s bravery.

On the other hand, netizens criticize GMA‘s 24 Oras for cutting its program short during Jiggy Manicad’s report. Perhaps the network couldn’t wait to start their GMA Telebabad block, hence the decision not to go ahead with Jiggy’s report. Eventually Jiggy reported on the situation during News TV’s ‘State of the Nation’ and on GMA’s ‘Saksi’, where he and fellow reporter Love Anover reported on the casualty count and the damage Tacloban endured during Yolanda’s landfall. While his report was already belated, netizens were still keen to praise his bravery and calmness.

Typhoon Yolanda is scheduled to depart the Philippine Area of Responsibility later today. In the meantime, news outlets around the country and internationally will continue to give reports regarding the path of the storm.
