New Host, New Timeslot for Celebrity Playtime

In addition to ‘Kapamilya Deal or No Deal’, Luis Manzano will now host ‘Celebrity Playtime’, replacing Billy Crawford. Luis debuts on the show starting this Saturday at 10:30 p.m. (Photo credit: ABS-CBN)

‘Celebrity Playtime’ is on the move.

Starting this Saturday, ‘Celebrity Playtime’ will now be seen at 10:30 p.m., right after ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’. The timeslot change meant that the show will go up against GMA’s ‘Celebrity Bluff’, a game show that ABS-CBN tried to at least emulate when they conceived ‘Celebrity Playtime’.

Its original timeslot will now be occupied by ‘Dance Kids’, a new kid’s talent show hosted by Alex Gonzaga and Robi Domingo. Meanwhile, ‘Celebrity Playtime’ will take over the timeslot of ‘Banana Split’, who moved to Sunday afternoons under the new name of ‘Banana Sundae’.

That is not the only change for the show, however. Due to ABS-CBN’s policy of not allowing its talents to appear on consecutive programs, erstwhile host Billy Crawford has decided to relinquish his duty as host of ‘Celebrity Playtime’, and cede the role to Luis Manzano.

The decision makes sense, since Crawford is already hosting ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’, the show that precedes ‘Celebrity Playtime’. Appearing in consecutive programs may not be helpful to viewers at all for fear of overexposure, hence a strict rule that is implemented by ABS-CBN to all its talents.

Here is the new schedule on ABS-CBN every Saturday night:

6:15 p.m. – Dance Kids

7:00 p.m. – Home Sweetie Home

7:45 p.m. – Maalaala Mo Kaya

9:30 p.m. – Your Face Sounds Familiar

10:30 p.m. – Celebrity Playtime

11:00 p.m. – The Bottomline with Boy Abunda

Now that ‘Celebrity Playtime’ is moving to a later timeslot, viewers should look forward to its long-awaited rivalry with ‘Celebrity Bluff’. The latter show is now on its third year, and has survived competition from ABS-CBN’s reality and talent shows despite the huge odds.

That said, viewers of ‘Celebrity Bluff’ should finally welcome a more equally imposing challenger. ‘Celebrity Playtime’ may be fairly new to many, but it’s also gaining its own following the same way that ‘Celebrity Bluff’ is doing, so let’s see if they’re up to the task of keeping up with the latter.

Boy Abunda Goes Solo Starting Tonight

The spotlight every late weeknights now solely falls on Boy Abunda.

Starting tonight, Abunda will be the host of the now-retitled ‘Tonight with Boy Abunda’, which will take over the timeslot of its predecessor ‘Aquino & Abunda Tonight. This comes after erstwhile co-host Kris Aquino left the show due to health concerns.

‘Tonight with Boy Abunda’ will carry some of the elements from its predecessor, except that Abunda will be joined by some guest commentators who will analyze some of the hottest stories today. As always, interviews with some of the country’s headliners will highlight the show, with the participation of viewers via social media.

While the transition to Boy Abunda going solo will not be a problem (he’s already used to hosting solo on ‘The Bottomline with Boy Abunda’), there is one problem concerning the title of the show. Some viewers may think that ‘Tonight with Boy Abunda’ is related to GMA News TV’s ‘Tonight with Arnold Clavio’, despite its differences in format.

If ABS-CBN were smart enough, they could have promoted Boy Abunda’s new daily solo show as a spin-off to ‘The Bottomline with Boy Abunda’. Perhaps ‘The Daily Bottomline’, ‘Bottomline 15’ or ‘The Bottomline in 15 Minutes’ would have been a more appropriate title, isn’t it?

Or they would just rename it as ‘ 15 Minutes with Boy Abunda’. Either way, ABS-CBN would have been more creative if they created a better program title instead of copy-pasting one that is already used on another network.

As for Kris Aquino, her departure from the show leaves her with just one program in ‘Kris TV’. Perhaps it’s only good for her to do only one show, given the recent health scares that affected her, not to mention other projects not related to television appearances.

All 15 minutes of Boy Abunda on his new show should be interesting. Let’s see how it pays off.

‘Tonight with Boy Abunda’ airs weeknights after ‘Pinoy Big Brother: 737’ on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida.

Sorting Out ABS-CBN’s Upcoming Weekend Primetime Schedules

With the entry of ‘Pinoy Big Brother: 737’, the weekend scheduling on ABS-CBN becomes even more tricky. (Logo courtesy of ABS-CBN and Endemol)

The succeeding weekends on ABS-CBN will be very tricky in the programming department.

On Saturday, June 6, the second season of ‘The Voice Kids’ officially kicked off with the ‘blind auditions’ series of episodes. The show aired following ‘Home Sweetie Home’ at 6:45 p.m., thereby putting ‘Mga Kwento ni Marc Logan’ into a temporary hiatus.

The following night, TVK’s ‘blind auditions’ continued. This time, the show aired after ‘Wansapanatym’ at 7:00 p.m., pre-empting ‘Goin’ Bulilit’ on that day.

The season premiere of ‘The Voice Kids’ came on the same weekend that ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ aired its season finale. While at first glance it seems that TVK would be the one that would replace YFSF, ABS-CBN braintrust had other ideas.

And so they did, premiering ‘The Voice Kids’ just as ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar”s first season was coming to a close. As expected, both series were a hot topic on Twitter, and as far as ratings are concerned, both are poised to hit it big in both Kantar and AGB Nielsen.

With YFSF taking a break, the focus now shifts to the upcoming weekend schedules on ABS-CBN. On the same night as YFSF’s finale, ABS-CBN announced that ‘Pinoy Big Brother: 737’ will launch on June 20, giving the network enough time to sort out the schedule for the weekend after.

Based on logic, here are the possible weekend primetime schedules for June 20-21 and beyond:

Saturday (6:00 p.m. onwards)

  • Home Sweetie Home
  • The Voice Kids
  • Maalaala Mo Kaya
  • Pinoy Big Brother: 737
  • Banana Split: Extra Scoop
  • The Bottomline with Boy Abunda

Sunday (6:00 p.m. onwards)

  • Goin’ Bulilit
  • Wansapanatym
  • The Voice Kids
  • Rated K
  • Pinoy Big Brother: 737
  • Gandang Gabi Vice
  • Sunday’s Best

Should both TVK and PBB be held live on the same day, it may induce cramming on the part of ABS-CBN once it ran overtime. It is up to the network’s braintrust to sort this one out.

Still, expect ABS-CBN to make a bigger impact in both social media and in the ratings in the succeeding weeks. Both TVK and PBB have proven themselves to be a smash hit in both aspects, so there is nothing to worry about.
